GOOLE Judo Club collected a haul of three gold and three silver medals at this year's senior open.
Five fighters from Goole took part including Adam Stevens (16) who fought at under 55/60 kilos in the youths category, along with Dane Mitchell (17) at under 73k.

Both came away with a silver medal and in the senior category, Dane went one better to collect gold, after winning all four of his fights, including the final against fellow club member, Simon Dilks (23) who took the silver.

But Dilks did win the u66k category, while Simon Durston (23 ) won gold in the 90k plus competition.

Senior club coach John Burkill said: "Chris Smithson also took part at novice level and this was his first event, but he fought very well.

"A special memorial trophy was also awarded to Goole's Duncan Evans in memory of Chris Hyde, a former member of Goole Judo Club for many years, who passed away earlier this year aged just 40.

"Chris' family presented the trophy and the cup will be awarded to a Goole Judo Club member every year which is awarded for the spirit of judo and helping out at the club."

John added that Goole Judo Club won the 'best club of the day'.

As a former Goolie and one time member of Goole Judo club, it is always a pleasure to read about Coach John Burkhill's successes; the most recent being the senior open a short while ago, and their medal tally of three gold and three silver. I would like to contact John personally in order to congratulate him on his achievements over the years. I left Goole for Canada in 1982 and unfortunately that is when I lost contact with my old club. Can he still be reached at the Leisure Centre? Just for the record, my name is Gary Worton and I was a 1st Dan when I last set foot on the mat, which was in the Victoria Pleasure Grounds behind the soccer stands. Hope to hear from you soon.
