Anglers forced to break ice

Anglers from all over the county were forced to break the ice as they braved sub-zero temperatures to compete in round 4 of the nine-match Mosella Winter League on the Selby Canal at the weekend.
With the ice up to two inches thick, the match was delayed for two hours before finally starting at 11am on Saturday. And Mosella Selby’s Chris Riley continued his good form this season by taking first prize among the 24 participants representing three Selby teams as well as anglers from Hull, Leeds and Wakefield.
The hardy competitors were undeterred, defying the inclement conditions for a full five hours, prompting league spokesman John Waterhouse to comment: “I sometimes think we do need our heads seeing to.” But he assured me that they nevertheless enjoyed themselves despite being taken by surprise over the depth of the ice.
“It’s the first time we’ve had to break the ice this winter, but it was thicker than we expected to say we had only had two nights when the temperature had dropped. That’s what caught us out as last year’s big freeze was much colder.”
Meanwhile new membership cards are now available for 2011 members of the Sugar Mill Ponds Angling Club wishing to renew this year. But they must do it by March 31 at £30 for adults and £15 concessionary. Anyone wishing to go onto the waiting lists should write to Mrs Jo Armes, 1 Newclose Lane, Goole, East Yorkshire DN14 6LT.
