Athletes inspired by dawning of Olympic year
Evidently inspired by the dawning of what promises to be a memorable sporting year with the London Olympics taking centre stage, the Selby Striders running club turned out in force for the opening event of the season.
There were 17 members competing in the Brass Monkey Half Marathon, the flagship event of the Knavesmire Harriers.
And heading the list was Ben Hamilton, who is fast establishing himself as one of the top two runners in the club.
Ben became the 15th man in the club’s history to clock a sub-80 minute time for the 13.1 mile distance when he finished in 1 hour 19 minutes 05 seconds on the Sunday before last.
Rob McWilliam opened his account for the year with a time of 1:23:43 and Ian Robertson was the third member home inside 90 minutes with a time of 1:28:46.
There were no fewer than six members making their club debut, two of whom – Susan Parkinson (1:46:34) and Caroline Wilmore (1:48:07) – went straight onto the ladies’ all-time performers list for women clocking times under two hours.
The other four debutants were Phil Stephenson in 1:45:08, Simon Simms 1:46:36, Paul Hyde 1:53:06 and Vicki Kirkham 2:03:31.
The times of the other club members were Andy Kay 1:41:34, Steve Middup 1:45:14, Dave Papworth 1:54:25, Ellen Briggs 1:55:34, Andrea May 1:55:35, Debbie Scott 1:55:46, Dave Kellett 1:57:42 and Gillian Kellett 2:14:12.
