Belles top bill in ‘Pyjama Game’

Those of my generation might remember a fun musical called the Pyjama Game with Doris Day starring in the film version.
The chances are the young ladies of the Brayton Belles open-age teams won’t even know who the legendary actress/singer is, but they managed something of a re-enactment of the show – not on the stage, but on a snow-covered football pitch, and colourfully kitted out in their pyjamas and wellies in spite of the sub-zero temperatures.
A match between the first team and reserves had been arranged as a fund-raiser for the club well before the arctic blast, and I fully expected it to be called off, but the intrepid ladies weren’t going to be beaten by the weather.
The original idea was that spectators would be charged £1 to view such a spectacular sight, but when push came to shove the fans weren’t as hardy as the players, so not much money was raised, although they did manage to collect a bit more cash with a quiz at the Albion Vaults where the girls recovered with a well-deserved drink afterwards.
Club founder Paul Thompson commented: “Wellies probably turned out to be the best footwear anyway and the Belles once again proved their character by having a great afternoon – not only with team-building but also by creating a snowman!”
The club, which will be celebrating its tenth anniversary with a party at the end of the month and which also caters for a number of junior girls’ teams, is already recruiting for next season. So if you want to compete and have fun at the same time call Paul on 01757 703002 (all ages welcome). More pictures on page 43.
