Bowled over by Bryan’s hat-trick

The apparently unique achievement of 17-year-old Josh Cruise recorded in a recent issue – of representing Selby in cricket, rugby and football all in the same year – has been done before. Well, almost!
Bryan Durkin, currently vice-president of the Selby Cricket Club, has also played for the town in all three sports, representing Selby in cricket and football during the 1960s before playing second-row forward for the rugby 1st XV from 1972-1993.
Now 63, Brayton-based Bryan was a left-arm fast bowler for Selby from 1965-72 and again in 1983/4.
In football he played for Selby Shipyards, Riccall United, Abbey Vaults and Selby Amateurs, but did play five or six times in goal for Selby Town during the 1967/8 season – either when the regular keeper was injured or in a midweek match – back in the days when they were in Division 1 of the old Yorkshire League.
“Not even the Sherwoods could boast that,” he used to say to Micky Pearce (Selby’s current cricket and rugby club chairman), referring to the legendary Selby sporting family who now live in Sheffield.
John Sherwood was a bronze medallist in the 400m hurdles at the 1968 Mexico Olympics while wife Sheila won silver in the long jump and Stephen, John’s younger brother, played cricket with Bryan for Selby Olympia before goalkeeping for Chelsea and Watford – representing the latter in an early 1980s cup final against Everton. Before switching to rugby union, Bryan played rugby league for Abbey Vaults (prior to the Selby Warriors era) but first had to survive an interview in Leeds with RU officials who wanted to make sure he hadn’t received any cash for his RL endeavours. How times have changed!
