Bowls league launches recruiting drive
A major effort to recruit more players is being launched by the Selby and District Bowling Association to offset a worrying drop in membership.
With 13 clubs and 16 teams, the league has thrived over the years, but most clubs are now struggling to attract new players.
All clubs are being encouraged to hold an open day in May with funds provided to help them stage taster sessions linked with a wider media-based promotion. And the league is also planning to get involved in June’s ‘Selby Olympics’ sporting weekend to mark the passing through the district of the torch rally.
Association secretary Dennis Tredgett, of the Eggborough club, admitted that part of the problem was that some were well over 80 and now less interested in playing competitively, but it was also just that there was now such a variety of activities available to people.
“People are doing other things with their spare time. And I don’t think it’s unique to bowls; it’s a sports issue generally.
“We’ve certainly got some very good youngsters – and that’s part of what we’re wanting to emphasise, that it’s not just an old man’s sport!”
