Carlton suffer heavy defeat

Dringhouses CC 1st 137-1 Carlton Towers 136

CARLTON Towers First team visited Dringhouses on the last Saturday of June and on a sultry day a thunderstorm failed to appear and save them from a heavy defeat.

Captain Mark Holmes lost the toss and Carlton were invited to bat in the York and District Cricket League Division Two game.

Despite losing an early wicket 53 was reached with Paul Wright (33) and Jon Dilkes (23) leading the way.

But the middle order batsmen failed again and with 28 overs gone they were 76 for 7.

At this stage junior player Mark Spetch (52) and change bowler Joe Richardson (9) showed the application required to add 60 precious runs before the tail subsided for nothing, leaving an all out score of 136 in 42 overs.

Despite good bowling by John Crowe 4 for 51 and veteran Mick Kenyon 4 for 38 and 3 lbw this was a disappointing display.

Dringhouses used only 28 overs to overtake the Carlton score with John Crowe (86 not out) completing an excellent all round afternoon for the home team.

Joe Richardson was the only wicket taker for Carlton with 1 for 47 and the team were back at Carlton in time to watch the Seconds to improve on their superiors.

Carlton CC 2nds 163

Pocklington 2nds 165-2

POCKLINGTON put Carlton in to bat and the best seconds bowling team to visit the Fishpond Field this season set them a severe test.

From 4 for 2 an innings of 33 by Martyn Denby, 25 David Hoe and 40 from a fast developing Louis Ellin saw the score to 120 for 3 before wickets fell quickly as the overs receded.

David Squires made 28 and saw the score to a respectable 163.

Sam Morris (2 for 39) well supported by David Squires and Sean Morris toiled manfully but Pocklington reached their target greatly helped by six dropped catches.

The saying catches win matches was never more true as Carlton were beaten by eight wickets in the York Senior League Division 5a match.
