Carlton Towers Cricket

CARLTON Towers 1st XL game at high flying Harrogate turned out to be 'a bad day at the office'.

Jon Dilkes won the toss and elected to bat, the top order never got to grips with a varied Harrogate attack and found themselves in big trouble at 44 for 4 before a maturing Oliver Lister 24 and Mark Holmes 27 made a partial recovery with a stand of 49, before the tail marshalled by last man out Graham Spence top scoring with 32 proving again his all-round value to the team as the innings closed in the last over for an under par 140 all out.

Harrogate's reply was dominated by an innings of 76 not out by Geoffrey Baines (very apt initials).

All the Carlton bowlers strived to do their utmost with a new ball sponsored by the Oddfellowes Arms; Neil Robinson 1 for 26 off 10 overs being the pick as Harrogate reached their target with 8 overs to spare.

Carlton Towers 2nd XL were involved in another high scoring game as visitors Hovingham took advantage of winning the toss, posted an all out score of 232, as they were dismissed in the last over.

Jeff Sayers 92 and Selby's MP Nigel Adams 64 with 4 sixes and 6 fours found runs easier to get than current Honourable Members expenses apparently! Josh Thornton 3 for 37 and Adam Mooring 3 for 34 bowled well without the back up they deserved, but at least the high wide and no balls of recent weeks was reduced to just 2.

Skipper Martyn Denby decided to protect a longer tail than usual by opening and compiled a very solid 69 to hold the innings together, and with support from Steve Carr 41, saw to it that the visitors were never going to dismiss the home side who proceeded to 149 for 5 when the overs finished.

Nigel Adams proving his all-round capabilities by taking the wickets of both Denby and Carr as he took 2 for 54 in 10 overs, no doubt he will have more serious tasks to perform in the future.
