Carlton Towers cricket results
AT LAST Carlton Towers 1st XL managed their first victory of the season and it was worth waiting for, the Band of Brothers seized victory over Dringhouses in comprehensive fashion.
Winning the toss and batting, despite the early loss of skipper Jon Dilkes, Louis Ellin and young opener Scott Woffendon forged a solid recovery as they blunted the Dringhouse attack with classic sensible batting before Woffendon was dismissed for 36 with the score at 70.
His judgement of when to play or leave the ball was a lesson to both old and young who were fortunate to be there.
Despite another small hiccup Mark Holmes joined Louis Ellin with 97 for 4, the stage was well and truly set as Holmes struck 7 fours and 3 sixes in just 32 balls a superb 50 as he and the resolute Ellin added 87 in cavalier fashion.
Louis Ellin was eventually out for 56, his maiden 1st XL 50 with the score on 200. The innings closed on 222 for 7.
With a new ball sponsored by R & I Haw milk deliveries, captain Jon Dilkes roared into Dringhouses sending back both openers for just 15.
Mark Holmes bowled a marathon spell of 21 overs 4 for 63 as Towers chipped away at the Dringhouses middle order.
The introduction of 16-year-old Adam Mooring 2 for 30 made inroads at a vital stage with an incisive burst and coupled with a brilliant throw from Scott Woffendon to run out the obdurate Dews, opened the door for Jon Dilkes coming back on to finish off the visitors with 13 overs for 40 and an all out score of 144, a 75 run victory - 30 points.
The 2nd XL game at Cawood ended in a winning draw for the visitors who were put in to bat, a decision they must have rued as Simon Boddye 63 and Stephen Watson 45 put on 92 for the first wicket.
Chris Heald 26 helped Boddye to see the total to 139 before a mini collapse saw the score at 173 for 8 and in danger of being a disappointing end to a good start.
However, Josh Thornton 34 and Andy Stockdale 30 shared a stand of 56 with a flurry of boundaries seeing the final score to an imposing 239 all out.
In reply Cawood never looked like reaching their goal as Steve Landers 4 for 27 off his 12 overs, and Simon Boddye 1 for 37 off his 12 overs, reduced them to 75 for 6 but stubborn resistance by Tim Wilkes and Owen Carney saw them hang on for a draw with 103 for 6 in their allotted overs.
The Under 17s XL completed the League and Cup double with a hard earned victory at Sprotborough by a margin of 25 runs.
