KEVIN Clegg served up a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 win over teenager Jake Prime in the final of Doncaster Lawn Tennis Club’s Closed Championships Men’s Open Singles on Saturday.

Club No 1 Clegg, partnered by Dave Cole, also stormed to a resounding victory over Prime and joint-club coach Mick Hague in the Men’s Open Doubles.

But he missed out on a clean sweep of titles when tasting defeat in the Mixed Open Doubles. Partnering Jayne Hale, he was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 by Lucy Wright and Andrew McDougall in an exciting final.

McDougall made the headlines on the front page of a number of national daily papers after suffering a cut leg after being accidentally kicked by David Nalbandian whilst officiating as a line judge at Queens in the annual pre-Wimbledon event.

Hale, who was partnered by Laura Twidale, also finished on the losing side against Lucy Wright and Pat Binstead in the Ladies’ Open Doubles final.

Wright and Binstead, who had been expecting a closer game, stormed their way to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Clegg’s son Matthew lost 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 against fellow teenager Jonathan Warren in the Men’s Handicap Singles final.

Husband-and wife pairing Mike and Wendy Gray suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the hands of another husband-and-wife pairing Sean and Jayne Hale in the Mixed Handicap Doubles final. John Carter and Martin Talbot posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Barry Hodges and Mike Gray in the Men’s Handicap Doubles final.
