Cricketing boss widens boundary
PEDALLING TO PARIS: Keith and Kathryn Ward get in training for the London to Paris ride.
Following their huge success with a coast to coast bike ride last summer, a cricket club president and his wife are taking on the London to Paris cycle challenge.
Lumby residents Keith and Kathryn Ward, respectively 62 and 55, will be pedalling almost 300 miles between the two capitals in a bid to raise another £3,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
They say their 180-mile ride from Workington to Sandsend, which raised £3,400, changed their lives and didn’t hesitate when the society invited them to stretch themselves still further at the end of June this year.
“Although a longer distance (293 miles), there will not be the big hills as in northern England,” said Keith, who is president of the Hillam and Monk Fryston Cricket Club.
The couple originally got on their bikes as a tribute to Keith’s dad, who died from Alzheimer’s in 2010.
And because of the tremendous support already shown by sponsors last year, they have this year decided to raise funds through events all participants can enjoy. This includes a wine-tasting evening at Field & Fawcett, York, on March 22 at £15 per head including food and a ceilidh at Lumby Hall on April 21 courtesy of owner Liam Condon at £20, also including food.

“We can’t believe how this has changed our lives in that we still like going out on our bikes, even after last year’s big effort,” said Keith.
