'Daft spell' costs Vikings dearly

GOOLE AFC are looking to bounce back after suffering a heavy home defeat at the hands of league leaders Mickleover Sports.

The Vikings found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline last Saturday when the Derbyshire outfit left the Victoria Pleasure Grounds with all three points.

For more than half an hour Goole more than held their own but the visitors effectively ended the game with a three goal blitz in five minutes just before half-time.

After the break the home side pulled one back when Glyn 'Dot' Cotton scored midway through the half but Mickleover restored the three-goal cushion with eight minutes to go.

Goole manager Karl Rose reflected on another disappointing afternoon.

He said: "It was a daft five minute spell which killed us just before half-time. Three goals all from crosses, a good side doesn't allow that to happen. Harsh words were said at half-time and to be fair the lads came out, got one back, hit the bar and their manager said we didn't deserve to get beat 4-1 but I am sick of hearing that.

"I am sure some of the fans are frustrated because you get one good performance and then one bad but there's no-one more frustrated than me."

Rose admits his side's shortcomings but has been frantically trying to bolster the squad in the transfer market.

He added: "Our starting 11 will give most teams a good game but we haven't got the strength in depth.

"My phone bill is going to be sky-high because I am constantly on it trying to bring players in but who is going to come at this stage of the season?"

The result left Goole in 17th position in the Unibond League First Division South with hopes of making the play-off positions long since extinguished.

Rose's side is, however, a comfortable 19 points away from an unwelcome relegation scrap and the next two fixtures present an opportunity to pick up two wins against fellow-strugglers.

On Saturday the Vikings visit third-bottom Quorn, 3pm kick off, and next Tuesday, March 2, sees Goole host Grantham Town, currently one position above them.

And Rose will welcome back defender Adam Green, midfielder Terry Barwick and top-scorer Gavin Allott to increase his depleted squad.

He said: "I will be a lot happier when I have got a full side out there and we will be going for six points."

l The Grantham match kicks off at 7.45pm.
