Dalesmen are defeated as Daisy arrives

Selby RUFC 2nd XV...................... 38

Ripon RUFC.................................. 13

A comfortable win over Ripon for Selby’s 2nd XV coincided with news of the arrival of Daisy – at 7lb 2oz – to John Liddle and partner, and the team would like to offer their congratulations, writes Paul Gabel.

With the visitors from the Dales turning up at Sandhill Lane with only 15 men and no front row, the game was played with uncontested scrums, and a strong Selby side hogged possession on another sun-filled day.

Playing in their opponents’ half for most of the first period, Selby’s game plan was to give good clean ball to their backs, but Ripon’s young backs wouldn’t let them through and it was something of a surprise when the visitors went in front after finding a gap in the home defence and scoring under the posts. But the Swans quickly battened down the hatches and retaliated with good play from the forwards by keeping ball in hand and rumbling it up the park, scoring through Booth and Rawson, though Ripon did manage to touch down out wide before the break.

With team spirit high and a good use of substitutions, Selby were able to put the game to bed early in the second half through a fantastic combination of backs and forwards started by Saunders and finished by Booth. Charlie McCoy and Rawson added further tries thanks to good possession and great team support, even finding both hooker M McCoy and prop Gabel out on the wing several times.

Unfortunately Saturday’s league match was abandoned when Andrew Nicklin suffered a dislocated elbow 20 minutes into the game. Andrew is fine, but he will be out for up to eight weeks.

Selby RUFC had earlier in the week held a two-hour coaching course attended by a dozen primary school teachers.
