Dave Coldwell duo set for big futures
PROMOTER Dave Coldwell believes he can hurry along the progress of Doncaster boxers Maxi and Jamie Hughes.
The Hughes, who aren’t related, boxed for the first time as Coldwell fighters at Rotherham’s Magna Centre and both of the Jamie Kennedy trained southpaws added wins to their records.
Maxi, who is from Rossington, won every round against Reading’s Ibrar Riyaz whilst light-heavyweight debutant Jamie, from Bentley, stopped Welshman Joe Jones in just 44 seconds.
Coldwell was pleased with the way Maxi dealt with Riyaz and predicts a bright future for the 22-year-old.
“The kid’s class and he’s got great banter. He’s my sort of kid and you could chuck him in front of a microphone or television camera easily,” said Coldwell.
“I wanted an opponent who’d put it on him and Riyaz takes rounds off of kids but he boxed his head off and with a bit of spite and picked out some beautiful shots. I think he’s a proper prospect.”
As for Jamie, Coldwell thinks that he packs a fearsome punch and that he will struggle to find fighters who will be able to trade with him for long.
“When I met him, I said to a few people that he just looks so powerful, even with his clothes on,” added Coldwell.
“You could tell when the first shot landed that the kid was thinking ‘what is this?’ It was sheer fear of the power he’s got.
“He needs refinement but he didn’t even connect properly and he knocked him out.
“The power he has is enormous and we’re going to have to find somebody who can take a punch.”
Woodlands’ former amateur star Jason Cunningham also wants to move on to better opponents.
The bantamweight said: “I’ve done my bit with escorting OAPS around the ring now and I want to face somebody who’ll test me.
“When somebody walks onto my shots you’ll see the best out of me. I’m hopefully going to step up to six rounds on a Hull show in November.”
Jason Ball’s scheduled defence of his Central Area light-middleweight belt in Blackpool has been cancelled due to challenger Jack Arnfield’s withdrawal.
Ball will now defend against Sheffield’s Sam Sheedy in November with the winner to face Barnsley’s Matthew Mallin.
Conisbrough’s Arron Boyce and Harworth’s Matt Brierley will make their professional bows on the same bill.
