Having done extremely well to avoid being blown away by the wind – and the opposition – in a second half which saw them a man down, Thorpe United (pictured left) will now make their first-ever appearance in the Barkston Ash Challenge Cup final.

And their opponents for the Easter Monday clash at Tadcaster Albion’s ground will be Tadcaster Magnets who won by the same scoreline against much-fancied Wetherby Athletic.

With the huge initial advantage of a wind blowing straight down the pitch, Thorpe’s diminutive forward line of Wood and Tessyman applied plenty of pressure on their opponents who struggled to clear their lines. But clear-cut chances were hard to forge, with set-pieces providing the best opportunity. And the breakthrough duly came when Hawe’s aerial challenge created confusion in the area. The ball landed at Wood’s feet but, as his goal-bound effort was cleared, the ref awarded a penalty for the keeper’s challenge on Hawe which prematurely ended the Thorpe skipper’s game.

Wood duly slotted home but further pressure from a procession of corners caused tempers to flare with Campbell shown a red card with 50 minutes to play. But Thorpe demonstrated their ability to organise and stand firm with strong running from Mustill while Pearce and Littlewood provided great cover for the magnificent backline of Brehenny, Lofthouse, Mitchell and Martland.

Ryan Greenwood scored half the goals in a fantastic game up front as Miller caned their opponents in a Castleford Sunday Morning League match at the Eggborough Sports and Leisure Complex. Chris Butler bagged his first-ever goal for the club after a superb run down the left, with Ian Quick also on target.
