Disabled golfers urged to get into the swing of new society

A fast-growing organisation catering for disabled golfers is looking to expand into the Selby district – and the North in general – where they hope to attract new members as well as sponsors.

And clubs within easy reach of local players are already on the fixture list of events for the coming year including Boothferry Golf Club at Howden and the Mid-Yorkshire Club at Darrington. Other events are set for Doncaster, Sheffield and further afield.

The Disabled Golf Society has come a long way since its launch just two years ago, initially focusing on the South.

Northern co-ordinator Kevin Booth explained that they are trying to concentrate on disabled-friendly courses close to the M6/M1/M62 corridors for ease of access and that sponsors are required to keep costs down which, with disabled players, can obviously involve special equipment.

With membership free, there are now 500 members of the society which caters for a cross-section of disabilities. They aim to attract not only those who have played prior to illness or injury but also those who have never tried the sport.

“Our main aim is to promote the game as a pathway to a healthier lifestyle and greater social inclusion for those who are disabled, irrespective of age, gender or disability,” said Kevin.
