DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Griffiths delighted Knights can grind out a win

DONCASTER Knights beat Welsh Premiership title challengers Llandovery 16-13 at Church Bank in the first of back-to-back British & Irish Cup pool 8 games.

Full-back Jamie Lennard was responsible for 11 of Knights’ points, with three penalties and a conversion, as they picked up their second win in the competition to move joint top of the pool with the previously unbeaten home side, who visit Castle Park in the return on Saturday.

“It was a good win down there because they are going well in their league, so it was a pleasing result,” Knights’ boss Clive Griffiths told The Star. The Welshman was less happy with the quality of the game.

“It was a stop-start game because of the officiating - there were over 20 penalties in the first half alone,” he said.

“The conditions were good, and both teams wanted to play, but they weren’t allowed to by circumstances beyond our control and in the end we had to grind out a result.

“It was important that we backed up last week’s Championship win over Jersey, and I was happy with our defensive work.

“We were down early on from a kick through but they didn’t look like scoring a try after that to be honest.

“We again had two men in the sin-bin, but we only conceded three points in the 20 minutes while we were down to 14 men, so that was a massive plus. I put a sin-bin strategy in place when I first came here, because it does happen a lot in rugby union due to the technicalities.

“And it worked well.

“We kept going until the end and Jamie Lennard held his nerve with his last two kicks of the game to win it for us.”
