Doncaster Knights to shine again says Joe Bedford

NEW signing Joe Bedford admits he thought his rugby union career was over prior to joining Doncaster Knights.

The scrum half played the full 80 minutes of his Knights debut against Nottingham on Saturday, showing signs of becoming an important player in the club’s battle against relegation following his switch from Newport Gwent Dragons.

But the former Rotherham Titans skipper says he almost conceded defeat in his battle against a serious shoulder injury which kept him out for nine months.

Bedford said: “There have been some really dark times over the past few months and I really did think my career was over.

“But I’ve worked hard to get back in the game and I really enjoyed myself on Saturday.

“I want to make a difference in the relegation fight and help keep this club in the Championship because that’s where it should be.”

The Knights suffered a 16-14 defeat to Nottingham at Castle Park, ending their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the British and Irish Cup.

Despite the outcome, Doncaster played some of their best rugby of the season in a much-improved second half and Bedford is confident they will triumph in the fight against the drop.

He said: “How we played in the second half showed we’re more than capable of staying in this division.

“It was a pleasure to be out there, playing that style of rugby and we were unlucky not to win.”
