DONCASTER RACECOURSE: Town Moor gearing up for Sky Bet Chase double header
With no racing at Doncaster Racecourse last weekend, all of the focus was on Wednesday’s fixture, the first meeting of 2013.
Having seen rain, rain and more rain over the last few weeks of December, it was great to get some brighter, clearer days to start the New Year, which allowed time for the track to dry out ready for the opening raceday of 2013.
What were sodden areas of the track for our last day of racing, the New Year Meeting on December 29, had dried out fantastically and we raced in good to soft conditions, a real testament to the grounds-team and the excellent drainage system at Town Moor – each doing their bit to ensure that punters enjoyed a fine day of racing.
It’s always great to get the year started well, and we did just that.
Wednesday provided the perfect lead up to our next raceday, the Sky Bet Chase, a big meeting for us. Taking place on Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26, the fixture is one of the highlights of the National Hunt season at Doncaster.
With 14 races taking place across the two days, and entertainment added to the second day of the meeting, both days promise to deliver excellent racing displays.
Friday’s racing features seven interesting line-ups. The big race of the day is the Sky Bet Mobile Handicap Hurdle, which will get away at 3:50pm. Friday will no doubt whet the appetite of all racegoers who attend, who will be looking forward to watching some great racing on Saturday.
Saturday’s Sky Bet Chase raceday includes some high-quality races and great runners and riders. Look out of the second (1:30pm), third (2:05pm), fifth (3:15pm) and sixth (3:50pm) line-ups of the day, which are all good quality races.
The highlight of the day though is the fourth, our listed race which gets started at 2:40pm. The Sky Bet Handicap, formerly The Great Yorkshire Chase, is a class one race, run over three miles.
It’s always a fantastic race, with many trainers using it to trial some of their leading candidates for National Hunt action at Aintree’s famous Grand National in April or racing at the Cheltenham Festival in March, one of racing’s most coveted fixtures.
If the on-the-track action is not enough, we finish the two-days of racing with live music. Formed by Coldplay fans for Coldplay fans, Coldplace will take to the stage after racing to entertain all racegoers.
In eight years the band has performed at over 400 gigs, travelling the length and breadth of the UK and beyond. It will be a great end to what will no doubt be two fantastic days of action here at Town Moor.
