DONCASTER ROVERS: Boss Graham Turner is a Shrewsbury legend

SHREWSBURY Town have made a sold start to life back in League One having being promoted back to the third tier of English football at the end of last season after finishing runners-up to champions Swindon Town.
They are one of only three teams to take a point off unbeaten league leaders Tranmere Rovers and have also picked up a point at high-flying Stevenage and run Notts County close before going down by the odd goal in five at Meadow Lane.
They also boast a 1-O home win over Preston North End, who beat Rovers 3-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday.
They picked up their second successive away draw on the same night, drawing 0-0 at Brentford.
Like Rovers, the Shrews have spent time in the Conference, being relegated from the Football League the same season as Rovers were promoted back.
But whereas it took Rovers five years to regain their Football League status, the Shrews managed it at the first attempt via the Promotion Play-Offs.
Few of the Shrewsbury players will be familiar to Rovers’ fans, but that not the case with manager Graham Turner, who celebrates his 65th birthday today.
Turner has long being associated with the Shropshire side. The centre-back/midfielder first linked up with the Shrews in 1973 when he was signed from Chester for £30,000.
Little did he realise at the time what an iconic figure he would become in the club’s history.
Turner was appointed player-manager in 1978-79 and he steered the Shrews to the Division Three title and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time - a feat he repeated the following season.
He left the Shrews to manage Aston Villa in 1984, being sacked after two years.
He later managed struggling Wolves, who he had supported as a boy, and steered them from Division Four to Division Two as well as Football League Trophy glory during his eight years in charge.
Turner took over at Hereford at the start of the 1995-96 season and later he went on to become the Bulls’ chairman.
During his time at Edgar Street, he secured the Bulls back-to-back promotions.
Turner returned to Shrewsbury in 2010 and has put together a useful squad with a strong a strong local flavour. Among a number of promising prospects is striker Terry Gornell.
