DONCASTER ROVERS: Brian Flynn is off to a flier

BRIAN Flynn paid tribute to past, present and possibly future key men after Rovers got their post-Dean Saunders era off to a record-breaking start.
Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 win at Stevenage, which saw second-placed Doncaster open up a four-point cushion between themselves and Brentford in third, set a new club record for consecutive away games without defeat.
Rovers, whose only league reverse on the road this season came on September 1 at Yeovil, have now gone 12 successive away games without defeat, eclipsing the previous record of 11 which was first set in 1946.
Joint caretaker boss Flynn, who said last week he is interested in taking on the job full time, was delighted to make a winning return to management at Broadhall Way, but also keen to lavish praise on others.
He said: “To break the record says everything about the mentality and ability we’ve got here.
“It’s also down to the quality of the defenders we’ve got, and goalkeeper.
“The whole team is well drilled and well organised. That’s all credit to Dean. He’s left that with us.
“We’ve been left with a strong squad with a lot of commitment.”
Flynn also had a special word for his fellow interim manager Rob Jones, who marked his first game in charge with a stoppage time winner.
“Rob’s done that in the past and he’ll keep doing it in the future,” said Flynn.
“It was great for him. He’s enjoyed his week. It’s been a little different for him being involved in the other side of things, on the training field and making decisions.
“But we agreed last week that the most important thing for Rob was to concentrate on the game, and that’s what he did. From start to finish we were very good,” he added.
“To end the game in such a way was a credit to the players. Their fitness levels are fantastic. They’re a good bunch and will get better.”
When asked about his own interest in the vacant position, Flynn added: “Let’s just enjoy this moment and see what develops this week.”
Rovers are expected to step up their search for a new manager over the next few days, with the interview process set to begin at the back end of this week.
The Star understands that Steve Lomas, Glynn Snodin, Paul Dickov and Stevenage boss Gary Smith are the current front-runners for the job.
