DONCASTER ROVERS: Dean Saunders praises Rovers attitude in fine win

DONCASTER Rovers boss Dean Saunders praised the professional attitude of his players after seeing them claim a rare win over League One rivals Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium.

Rovers were always in control after Iain Hume and David Cotterill had given them an early 2-0 lead and they went on to claim their third away win of the season.

Saunders said: “As a manager if you can get a genuine group of players who are all pulling in the same direction on the pitch, you are halfway there.

“I feel that I’ve got that and the players I left out (of the team) took it well.

“They know with us only having 18 of them that they are going to get their chance to play.”

Saunders was delighted to have kept another clean sheet and singled out skipper Rob Jones and fellow centre-back Jamie McCombe for praise.

“If you you wanted someone to defend your house those two would stand by your front door and stop people getting in,” he said. “The two of them were brilliant.

“Shelton Martis played well in midweek and was unlucky not to play today. I just felt that I couldn’t leave one of those two out the way we’ve been defending.”

Saunders was also pleased with the contribution made by loan striker Hume on his League One starting debut for the club.

“Obviously he’s still not 100 per cent but I thought that in addition to scoring a goal he was a nuisance and he showed bits of class,” he said.

“I also thought that Chris Brown worked hard; all of the team worked their socks off.”

The game marked the return of striker Billy Paynter.

The former Swindon and Leeds United man, sidelined in recent games with a thigh injury, came on late in the game and with Hume unavailable to play against his parent club Preston at the Keepmoat tomorrow due to the terms of his loan agreement, Paynter will come into contention for a starting berth against the Lancashire club.
