DONCASTER ROVERS: Haber and Akins joint threat for Boro

STEVENAGE boss Gary Smith is contemplating going for like-for-like with Doncaster Rovers as he aims to build on his side’s “most complete performance of the season”.

Smith switched to a more traditional 4-4-2 at Crewe on Saturday where Boro came from a goal down to beat Alexandra 2-1 with strikes from Lucas Akins and Marcus Haber.

Haber had been playing as a lone front man prior to last weekend but was flanked by Akins at Gresty Road.

Smith has recently added to his striking options by bringing in forward pair Steve Beleck and Sam Hoskins, on loan from Watford and Southampton respectively.

“It’s a lonely role when you’re on your own and we’ve played that way for a specific reason with numerous changes in the off season trying to find a platform and some stability,” said Smith.

“I always felt 4-4-2 was going to be the route we go.

“It’s important to have the right personnel, it’s important to make sure the players have good relationships; [the Crewe result] is a good advert for us to be working in that fashion.

“We’re not anywhere close to being where we would all want to be but we’ve certainly took a massive step in the right direction.

“When [Haber] is up there in a pair he looks the type of player we all feel he can be.”

Ninth placed Stevenage had won just one in eight prior to Saturday’s trip to Crewe. They are without a home win since October 23 when they edged past Portsmouth 2-1.

Since then Swindon, Preston, Crawley and Coventry have all taken maximum points away with them from Broadhall Way.

“I just don’t think we’ve been playing that badly to deserve some of the results that have gone our way but the league table doesn’t lie and you lose and you feel despondent for it,” said Smith.

“But we looked much better at Crewe and deserved three points.”
