Doncaster Rovers: I want to manage, says Rob Jones

MANAGER in the making Rob Jones is ready to grasp his opportunity at Doncaster Rovers with both hands.
Rovers’ skipper and joint caretaker boss Brian Flynn take charge of their first game since Dean Saunders’ shock departure at Stevenage today.
It will come as no surprise to anyone to learn that Jones - dubbed ‘Captain Colossus’ by chairman John Ryan - fully intends on moving into management once his playing days are over.
And the 33-year-old defender, a former teacher and natural born leader, is grateful for the chance to step up to the plate.
“I’m delighted to do it,” said Jones.
“It’s a boost to your own confidence when the chairman asks you to do something of this magnitude.
“I want to manage when I finish playing.
“This experience will give me an insight into what it entails to become a manager.
“I’ve learned an awful lot over the last week, it’s good for me and I’ve enjoyed it.
“The boys have enjoyed it too. There’s a lot of banter flying around, as you’d expect, but it’s all in very good humour.”
Flanked by Flynn, Jones this week stepped up his input on the training ground and will have equal say, alongside the former Wales caretaker boss, into team selection and tactics.
“It’s been fine,” said Jones, reflecting on his first week in his new role.
“It looks after itself really. Everybody knows their job here. We’re more than half way through the season and the players know what’s going on.
“It’s just a case of looking after it more than anything else.
“One good thing is I can pick myself,” he joked. “There’s still miles of life in my legs yet and I want to play in each and every game I can play in.”
Flynn and Jones were hoping to make a record-breaking start today.
Should Rovers avoid defeat at Broadhall Way they will have gone 12 consecutive league games unbeaten on the road, a new club record.
“It’d be massive for the club should we break it,” said Jones.
“The boys are working hard, and this record would be fantastic for us and it would show we’re moving in the direction we want to be heading.”
