DONCASTER Rovers boss Dean Saunders doesn’t need to ask defender Jamie McCombe what he’d like for Christmas.
He knows the former Huddersfield Town centre-back is keen to reclaim his spot at the heart of the Rovers defence following a lengthy lay-off with a hairline fracture of his spine.
“It’s been frustrating being out but it has made it a lot easier with the boys doing well,” said McCombe, an unused substitute in recent games.
“I’m working hard, training as hard as I can so that hopefully I’ll be ready to go in and play whenever I do. But Tommy (Spurr) has done a great job so it is not necessarily going to be that easy to get my place back by any means.
“But were I to get back in over the festive period I think we (Rob Jones and myself) could pick the partnership up where we left off.
“We’ve both played centre-half all of our careers and we’ve played quite a few games between us so we both know what we are doing.
“I want to get back in and play a major part in the club achieving promotion. It was disappointing to miss out on going top last weekend but I’ve never seen a league won in December.
“We’ve not got to lose focus on the end goal and if we can average two points a game throughout the season that usually gets you promotion.
“I knew it was going to be a difficult spell for us starting with Swindon away and then Coventry and MK Dons at home and Sheffield United on New Year’s Day because they are all in-form teams. We’ve also got to go to OIdham and Preston next week.
“But I know that we are good enough to come out of it with more points than the others up there with us.
“Hopefully with four games in such a short period of time I’ll get my chance and an ideal scenario would be to get back in and for us to win all four games. But I’d also take four wins and not getting back into the team.
“I’ve obviously played against United a few times at Huddersfield including last season’s League One Play-Offs, and I know that they are a good footballing team and it’s going to be a very tough test.
“They like to pass the ball and play expansive football and they’ve been there or thereabouts for the last couple of years and I expect them to finish in the top six at least.”
