DONCASTER ROVERS: Karl still ‘Duing guid’ after 16 years

THE last time Rovers got anything from a trip to Colchester Karl Duguid was in the opposing line-up. Quite amazingly now 16 years on he could still be on the teamsheet.
Rovers, then managed by Kerry Dixon, earned a point in a 2-2 draw at Layer Road.
Scott Colcombe and Jon Schofield’s penalty twice gave Rovers the lead, whilst Duguid, aged 18 at the time, came on from the bench with 15 minutes to go.
A lot has happened since that game. Both clubs have new stadiums and are a division higher than they were back then. The only thing that hasn’t changed is that Duguid, aged 34, is still around and can still be a threat.
Duguid, who can operate anywhere down the right hand side, wasn’t involved in the Us weekend defeat at Brentford because of a knock he picked up in training but is expected to return to the squad against Rovers. In modern day football, particularly in the lower leagues, it’s rare for a player to have stuck around for so long.
Apart from a three season stint with Plymouth, Duguid has spent his entire career with Colchester and made his 400th appearance for them last year before signing a one year extension in the summer.
A goalkeeper who struggled to make his mark at Rovers had left for Leyton Orient the summer previous and he will also be involved tomorrow.
Nigerian Ademola Bankole became quite a useful journeyman keeper and is the goalkeeper coach at Colchester.
On their last trip to the old Layer Road ground in 2005, Rovers suffered the humiliation of two own goals on their way to a 3-2 defeat.
Sean McDaid and Steve Foster both put through their own goal after Chris Iwelumo’s first minute strike. Rovers’ strikes came from Jonathan Forte and Michael McIndoe’s penalty.
