CO-OWNER Terry Bramall believes Doncaster Rovers belong in the Championship - and wants to recruit a manager who shares that ambition.
In a rare interview, multi-millionaire Bramall told The Star that age is not among the criteria for Dean Saunders’ replacement.
But tapping into the club’s potential, and finding somone suited to the Rovers way, is at the top of Bramall’s wish-list.
“With the resources the club has, and the support the club gets from the town, we could make a good fist of being in the Championship,” said Bramall.
“I think we were very unlucky in there last time. We had two or three really good seasons at that level.
“But we’re a much stronger club today.
“We know more clearly what we’re about and I think that will stand us in good stead.
“Age is not a criteria for the new manager,” he added.
“It could be someone young or it could be someone who carries more experience. It’s the potential we’re looking for, and the fit with the club.
“We’re a totally different club now because we have the stadium, which we didn’t when Dean arrived.
“We are now almost the complete football club.”
Bramall, meanwhile, sought to reassure fans that the board are well qualified to choose the right candidate.
“You don’t get a much bigger shock than when you get a call at 10pm on a Saturday night and somebody wants your manager,” said Bramall.
“But the fans should take comfort from our ability as a board to manage.
“We have interim arrangements in place and we know what we’re doing.
“At least we know the manager has gone and we’re not heading up any cul-de-sacs with legal proceedings or such like.
“It’s dealt with, we know exactly where we are going and we feel there is a great opportunity ahead of us.”
Rovers will accept applications for the vacant manager’s post until Monday, chief executive Gavin Baldwin told The Star.
The club then hope to speak to the five strongest candidates next week, with a view to unveiling Saunders’ successor in time for the home game with Leyton Orient on Saturday, January 19.
However, Baldwin insists that the club are not committed to appointing a new manager in the next fortnight and have every faith in joint interim bosses Brian Flynn and Rob Jones.
