DONCASTER ROVERS: Stevenage proving a growing threat in Football League

STEVENAGE are proving to be one of the rising stars of the Football League

After winning promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history in 209-10 they won a second successive promotion the following year when being promoted to the League One at the first attempt via the League Two Promotion Play-Off final.

League One proved to hold no fears for them and they reached the Play-offs, only to be beaten by Sheffield United.

A feature of Boro’s rise through the divisions has been their outstanding defensive record.

They had the best defensive record in both their final year in the Conference and also their promotion-winning campaign in League Two.

Only champions Charlton Athletic had a better defensive record in Division One.

Rovers boss Dean Saunders sounded Boro out about centre-backs Jon Ashton and Mark Roberts during pre-season only to told that they were not available. Both are expected to line-up against his side in tomorrow’s game.

Stevenage have shown that last season was no flash in the pan and they will arrive at the Keepmoat lying in second spot in the table and boasting a 100 per cent away record in three games.

Only a slightly disappointing home record has kept them off top spot - prior to Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Walsall they hadn’t won on home soil this season - their previous three home games all being drawn.
