ROVERS’ ref justice pain could act as a motivational factor against Colchester United tomorrow, according to boss Dean Saunders.

Saunders will be without Billy Paynter after deciding not to appeal the striker’s controversial red card against Sheffield United due to a lack of video evidence.

But he says the red mist in the camp at referee David Coote’s decisions against the Blades could spur the squad on against the struggling U’s.

Saunders said: “Unfortunately for us the television cameras follow the ball and we’ve not got any footage to prove that Billy’s done absolutely nothing.

“It’s an unbelievable decision but I can’t risk appealing and losing him for another game.

“The three officials have stuck together and said he kicked out at Tony McMahon but they’ve got it totally wrong.

“Now we have to do without Billy for three games.

“And then there was the penalty on top of that, but we’ve got to put it to bed now.

“Sometimes things like this happen during the season and they make you stronger as a unit,” he added.

“Hopefully it’s had that effect on the players for Saturday.

“Colchester have lost seven on the trot, and it’s a club record if they lose eight, so they’ll be coming here to try and put that right.

“We’ve got to approach the game exactly like we did against Sheffield United.

“When you sit back and look at the game it’s probably the best we’ve played at home this season.”

Saunders is facing a potential striker crisis with injured pair Chris Brown and Robbie Blake both doubtful.
