Flying Swans let York rivals off the hook

Selby’s second string rugby union side so nearly captured a major scalp in the shape of top of the league rivals York before letting down their guard in the last play of the game, writes Paul Gabel.

York were riding high on the back of five wins, but the Swans refused to be intimidated with Bourke bullying his way through for two tries, both unfortunately disallowed due to infringements before he got the ball.

Both sides put their bodies on the line as they attacked and defended with passion and a score didn’t come until almost 20 minutes into the second half when Selby created an overlap for Firth to touch down.

Townend then doubled the lead but York kept their cool and, with five minutes left, were back in the game with a lucky try. But when the referee indicated the last play, York equalised as the Swans let them off the hook.

Meanwhile veteran rugby star Shaun Austerfield has agreed to bring his knowledge and vast experience to the team as part of the set-up. Shaun’s playing career was brought to a premature end when he was seriously injured in a road accident.

A good balance of youth and experience – with ages ranging from 17 to 50-something – contributed to a cracking win at York for Selby 3rds in Division 2 of the Central/North District League, writes Chris Roberts.

As the hosts huffed and puffed their way over the halfway line with a few halting forays which Selby repulsed with interest, Leigh Adamson, Paul Ray, Jason Goodwin and Adam Roberts scored first-half tries, with Adamson adding a conversion for a 22-0 lead at the turnaround.

Oliver O’Brien and Goodwin added further tries, with Ray Adamson converting the latter score, before York were rewarded with a couple of late consolations.

Special mention goes to the outstanding effort put in by the team’s young players, particularly Adam Calvert and Paddy Rowntree. But Andy Bennett’s wit and energy also inspired.
