Goole Club aiming to hit the heights
A NEW badminton club in Goole district is hoping to hit the heights and is keen for new members to join – especially ladies.
The Hirst Badminton Club – with members from villages all over the area including Snaith, Thorne and Airmyn – is holding regular sessions at Carlton Holy Family School on Thursday evenings from 8 to 10pm.
And although only a few months old, they already have some 30 names on their books.
Selby businessman Simon Benson, 53, who plays for high-flying Goole in the Hull League, wanted to start something nearer his Hirst Courtney home and believes the forthcoming Olympics may well stir more players into action.
The club – for 16-year-olds and upwards – is run on a ‘pay as you play’ basis rather than membership and generally involves mixed teams.
He said that while other clubs in the area are short of ladies, they don’t do badly in this department.
Simon, who runs a second-hand shop in New Street, has been playing the sport for some 40 years.
