Chris Harkin grabbed a hat-trick as Cliffe celebrated their first win of the year by hitting Osbaldwick for six.

But Ally Harris was also a star as he kept a clean sheet with a set of stunning saves after being a virtual spectator for almost an hour.

Harkin had scored twice within the first ten minutes and completed his trio from the spot when Steven Rowbottom was clattered inside the box shortly after the break.

Chris Jackson, meanwhile, was denied on a few occasions and was eventually booked when he took out his frustration with a deliberate handball.

And when Harkin was felled in the area, Luke Crowther dragged the penalty wide, leaving Cliffe 2-0 ahead at the break.

Following the Harris heroics, however, Crowther put his penalty miss behind him as he bundled the ball home. Rowbottom then added a fifth after skilfully working a yard of space in the area and super-sub Tom Hogg – looking as sharp as ever – completed the rout.

Manager Keith Tiplady will want to build on this morale-boosting performance which leaves Cliffe in fourth position, two points outside the York Minster Engineering League Division 2 promotion places.

Tiplady said: “I was much happier with the team’s focus – the lads did all I asked of them.”

This weekend they visit Waterloo FC (formerly Cross Keys) for a County Cup tie and will be hoping to repeat their victory over the side in the Harold Robinson League Cup final five years ago.

The Reserves return to action at Tockwith and thanks go to John at the Albion Vaults for his post-match hospitality.
