DONCASTER Rugby League Club celebrated the greatest triumph in their 61-year history when coming from behind to beat Barrow 16-13 in the Championship One final at Warrington.

The Dons trailed 7-4 at the break but hit back with two converted tries by leading try-scorer Lee Waterman and man-of-the-match Craig Fawcett.

Barrow, who had two second half tries disallowed, went over for a second try to set up a nail-biting finale, but the Dons held out to lift their first ever league title after a final which lived up to all expectations.

“It was a very tough game and we didn’t make it easy for ourselves (by dropping the ball at times) but our try-line defence was outstanding,” said Dons boss Tony Miller.

“I thought they were going to score a few times but we somehow kept them out.

“We’ve defended well all season but we have got even better in the last four weeks.

“It’s great to be champions. We thought we’d won the title after we finished top of the league, but then they (the RFL) pulled the rug from under our feet which made us even more determined today.

“Barrow are a really good side and the best two teams in the division contested the final. They’ve got a lot of players who ask questions and we knew that we’d have to play well.

“We did a lot of work in training in defending the way they play and it paid off.”

Miler revealed that several players, including hooker Kyle Kesik, who again covered for injured play-maker Paul Cooke, wouldn’t have played had it not been a final.

The Dons have signed winger/full-back Dennis Tuffour. Previously with Super League side Hull FC, Tuffour, described by Miller as being ‘very strong and quick’ played for Hunslet this year.
