Hockey girls shine in double-header

Selby’s U14 hockey girls played exceptionally well in a double-header at Brigshaw High School where a 2-1 win over Northallerton was followed by a 0-2 defeat to Wakefield.

They got off to a great start against the Dales team with some good attacking moves down both wings while their strong defence made some competent clearances to midfield.

And they took the lead when a great run by Amy Purdy, supported by Emily Quantrell and Chloe Hall, forced the keeper into a mistake.

Emily followed up by finishing a terrific team goal after players’ player Abbie Knee set her up with a fantastic run.

But as Northallerton battled back, they could have drawn level were it not for amazing saves from Catherine Whitworth along with stout defending from Ellie Appleton.

They were in for a tough game next as Wakefield made life difficult for Selby’s defenders who nevertheless showed great resilience as Nichola Duckitt and Charlotte Purdy kept the opposition at bay for some time until passing skills finally broke down the Selby wall.

However, Tavi Brown, Chloe Hall and Abbie Knee made some fine runs as Selby launched good counter-attacks while brilliant tackles and interceptions from manager’s player Georgia Hodgkiss further restricted Wakefield’s chances.

“Overall, the Selby girls were fantastic with every player giving 100 per cent to the cause,” a club spokeswoman said. The girls are coached by Angie O’Mahoney, a key defender in Selby’s senior ladies’ team sponsored by the Selby Railway Club.
