Impressive victory delights manager

GOOLE AFC banished the winter blues with an impressive 3-1 away win at Brigg Town on Tuesday night.

The result meant the Vikings recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season, albeit after an enforced five week break because of the recent cold snap and a glut of postponements.

Manager Karl Rose was delighted his side took maximum points from the trip to North Lincolnshire, particularly after the visitors fell behind just before half-time.

A brace from top scorer Gavin Allott was sandwiched either side of a strike from utility man Billy Law as Goole blew away their opponents with three goals in a blistering six-minute spell late in the game.

"The first half was a bit patchy and you could see no-one had had a game for five weeks but this was not through lack of effort," explained Rose.

"In the second half I changed it tactically with the shape and Gavin Allott played well. At the end we deserved it and the opposition said that. We were a different class and if they keep doing that week in, week out we will win a lot more than we lose."

The three points move Goole up to 13th in the Unibond League First Division South - 10 points off a play-off spot - with the fixtures set to come thick and fast for the Vikings.

Two games in four days against sides in the top six see Rose take his side to Sheffield FC on Saturday, 3pm kick off, and then the Victoria Pleasure Grounds welcomes Glapwell next Tuesday, January 26, 7.45pm start.

Said Rose: "We have got some tough games. It's a big month but the lads and me still believe we can get involved in the play-off shake-up at the end of the season."

This was echoed by his number two, assistant manager James Dudgeon who got a welcome 90 minutes under his belt during Tuesday's victory.

"These are the games we want to be playing. Ten points might seem a lot but getting a few back-to-back wins soon makes that up," added Dudgeon.

Midfielders Daz Winters, Glyn Cotton and forward Micky Goddard all return from suspension but striker Adam Lee still has two matches of his ban to serve.

• Last Saturday's home clash with Grantham Town was called off after health and safety fears were raised over slippery conditions of spectator areas and the pitch was also deemed unplayable following recent snow and rains.
