Inspired by floodlight switch-on

Cowling Harlequins..................... 16

Selby Warriors A.......................... 28

With their new state-of-the-art floodlights now switched on, Selby’s second string rugby league outfit were evidently inspired for their visit to Cowling, where some claimed they had witnessed the biggest comeback since Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead!

And it was a combination of youth and experience that seemed to have done the trick.

The visitors were 12-0 down when 44-year-old hooker Dave Sowden came on to give the side some direction and duly set up Scott Birch for a great try with a fine pass. Adam Lilley added another almost immediately afterwards thanks to further flowing passing from Paul Berriman and Russ Anderson.

And although the hosts took a 16-8 half-time lead with a try against the run of play, they were never to trouble the scorers again as the Simpson family gave a masterclass with 49-year-old Kev supported by sons Ben and 16-year-old Danny.

The latter reminded spectators of a young Wayne Fennell, especially when picking up the ball from behind his own try-line and beating virtually the entire home side in a sprint for the whitewash. And when Berriman booted the goal, there were only two points in it.

Birch then raced from his own half for his second after Sowden put him through the tiniest of gaps, with further tries from Matt Emmett and Russ Anderson. The final score came courtesy of a pass from Berriman who at times showed a style reminiscent of Aussie great Wally Lewis.

There were also two other 16-year-olds in the team with Ben Clarke awesome in the second row and Jack Fothergill playing his first-ever open-age game at full-back while young prop Louis Heaps had his best outing so far.

The club are in the midst of negotiations about significant sponsorship with second team player Andrew Church and his company Decorite.

Wyke are the visitors on Saturday, kick-off 2pm, with training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.
