A lady rally driver from North Duffield had to negotiate arctic conditions as she made a great start to the season by finishing fourth in class in her Peugeot 106 at Mallory Park.
But it could have been so much better for 25-year-old Sammi Gabb and her co-driver Wayne Smythe from Sheriff Hutton as a bump on the last corner of the first stage – caused by misjudging her breaking distance in the snow – added a crucial ten minutes to her time.
And it was her first-ever experience of racing in snow – all six inches of it – for which Baz Jordan of Jordan Road Surfacing donated a set of snow tyres to her Autoserv Selby-sponsored team.
The stage was going well until the incident in which the car locked up and as a consequence sustained a hit on the driver’s side wing and wheel. This bent the trackrod end, which meant she couldn’t steer, and required a quick change that left them needing to make up ten minutes on other cars in their class for a podium position.
