Junior cycling academy tastes sweet success
Sweet company Haribo have announced their sponsorship of the junior academy at the fast-expanding cycling club run by former Selby High School pupil Ashley Brown.
The academy squad, composed of four budding stars from all over Yorkshire, is all part of the commitment from Knottingley-based BBM Bikes to promote the sport and develop cyclists showing potential.
The BBM Bikes shop is linked with the Sportscover Altura elite team which includes Brown and former Olympian John Tanner, and is also the base for the BBM Revolution Cycling for All community club catering for all levels of cyclists with 250 members after just eight months including some from the Selby district and others from much wider afield.
Coached by ex-Olympian Mark Barry, the junior academy cyclists will be rubbing shoulders with some of the UK’s most experienced and accomplished riders and given the opportunity to race alongside seniors in selected events with a view to preparing them for life as a professional. Two of the four-strong academy line-up – Joe Moses and Jake Womersley – were third and fifth respectively at the recent Junior National Cyclo-Cross Championships.
BBM founder Ashley said: “We have come a long way in the past nine months with a two-fold vision of making cycling accessible to everyone in the community linked with one of the country’s most successful teams, allowing anyone to try out cycling as a sport, whether for health and recreation or competition.”
Meanwhile weekly coaching is available to youngsters aged five to 15.
