Keeper Woods the hero as Rovers pick up point

DONCASTER Rovers had to settle for a hard-earned point at the County Ground following a backs-to-the-wall performance.

But if you would have asked any Rovers fan they would have taken a point at the start of the game as Swindon is a hard place to visit.

It did not start too well, however, with the Robins taking an early lead after opening up Rovers’ normally solid defence.

But instead of being shunted into the sidings, Rovers quickly drew level when a home defender kindly put the ball in the back of the net for us.

Chances became few and far between after that - though they hit he woodwork twice - with Rovers not really creating a chance in the second half.

The hero of the hour was keeper Gary Woods, who had a fantastic game between the sticks, as we held out for a point which kept us on the heels of leaders Tranmere.

The spirit of the team was highlighted with skipper Rob Jones batting on after picking up an early injury, and Iain Hume, who took a nasty blow to the head late in the first half, coming out for the second half with a bandage round his forehead.

You,wouldn’t see many of the ‘Johnny Foreigners’ of the Premiership giving so much for the cause.

We now have a busy run-up to the festive period starting tomorrow with Coventry City visiting the Keepmoat Stadium,

They will no doubt be buoyed by the 5-1 victory over Walsall on Saturday, but the ghost of seasons past has come to haunt them again with financial matters threatening their future.

According to reports a sizeable amount of rent owed to their landlords needs to be paid very soon or they will booted out of the Ricoh Stadium. They are reportedly looking at playing home games at Nene Park - home of the now defunct Rushden and Diamonds. The omens do not look good.

But it should be a good game.

There have been calls this week again about a mid-winter break due to the weather and the late cancellation of the Notts County v Rotherham FA Cup replay on Tuesday.

The only problem in this country is you can never predict the weather from December-March so when do you take the break?

The Supporters’ Club members handbook should be ready to collect from the Supporters shop in the North stand community changing rooms on Saturday. Sorry for the delay.

Thanks to all supporters who bought tickets in the Christmas draw. Wining numbers should be on the VSC forum, local newspapers and the programme. Call me on 07961-727769 to arrange to collect your prize.

Please book early for the away games at Oldham and Preston over as we need to get the buses booked. For the Oldham game there are two buses going early for a morning of karaoke, a pint and turkey sarnies in Halifax en-route.
