More shocks as sacked Simon is made a scapegoat

As ex-captain Jonny Howson settles in to a snowy Norfolk after signing for Norwich City, his former club have been hit by further shock-waves including the sacking of manager Simon Grayson who has done much to keep the Whites focused on returning to the Premier League where they belong, writes Charles Gardner.

But because they have fallen off the pace somewhat in recent weeks, he has been made the scapegoat and the club faces a more uncertain future.

The loss of Howson, who lived in Hemingbrough during his spell as skipper, was of course a big blow following the exit of other top-class players who do not seem to have been replaced with quite the same quality. But is that the fault of a manager who apparently had his hands tied from a financial point of view?

Season-ticket holder and sometime sports deputy on the Selby Times Nigel Booth doesn’t think so.

“I think Grayson’s sacking is a bad move – and unfair on a man who effectively had his hands tied, neither having the money nor the resources to do what was necessary. And he was forced to sell players without really being able to replace them with any quality.

“I think quite a few fans have been on his side and supported him, and I’m not entirely sure what (Ken) Bates is doing. Because of the financial trouble the club was in not so long ago, I believe there’s some sort of embargo on what he (the manager) can spend until next season. And the idea of it lifting then could explain why people like Neil Warnock are pondering whether to join the club.

“But you’ve got to run a football club like a business and, as far as I can see, the only way Bates can make money on it is to sell the club.”

Meanwhile temporary boss Neil Redfearn had a dream start with the team’s 3-0 win at Bristol City, though admittedly the hosts were reduced to nine men. That made up somewhat for their 4-1 midweek drubbing at the hands of in-form Birmingham City which of course signalled Grayson’s departure. But whoever finally takes charge, there’s still a long way to go if the club wish to seriously challenge for promotion.
