MP opens club nets

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams played a perfect forward defensive stroke as he officially opened Drax Cricket Club’s new 3-bay net system.

The ball was bowled by life member Howard Thomas, who has been associated with the club for over 50 years.

The launch incorporated the club’s annual presentation as well as a fun day for all which included a wellie-throwing competition.

Junior games were followed by the handing out of an inscribed medal to every junior member by Mr Adams, a former club captain, after which a close Twenty20 game was held.

While the first team maintained their York Senior League Division 4 position in a difficult year plagued by wet weather, chairman John Finch praised the second string for their creditable mid-table finish in Division 7 after overcoming tremendous challenges.

The awards were as follows – 1st team Andy Shelton (batting), Matty Atkinson (bowling), Ben Shelton (fielding) & Matty Atkinson (best performance). Eric Smith Trophy joint winners Oliver Ounsley & Andy Shelton. Second team Paul Vickers (batting), Bryce Wilson (bowling), Phil Chaston (fielding) & Ben Spencer (best performance). Evening league Steve Smith (batting), Stephen Armitage (bowling) & club person of the year Sarah Birkby.

Junior coaching continues on Tuesdays from 6 to 7.30pm throughout autumn and winter at the Read School sports hall from October 2. All are welcome to benefit from the club’s qualified coaches.
