National award for squash coach
AWARDED for his continuing commitment to the sport of squash was Goole coach Derek Norris recently.
Mr Norris received the Volunteer Recognition Award from England Squash and Racketball - the governing body that represents the racket sport throughout the world.
The award is one of only 12 which are given out each year.
Derek has been involved in the game since the early 1980s when he was captain of the only team at that time for Goole.
As the game progressed so did the the team numbers before the club, known as Kilpin, folded and the players moved to a new base at Goole Leisure Centre.
Staying within the Hull and East Riding squash leagues, Derek travelled around the county playing before joining the Humber Development Group in the 1990's and helping to form Humbersquash.
He explained: "This is a group of different people but all with the same thing in common, the desire to build up the game of squash to its former glory."
Derek has taken his coaching levels up to level 3 junior county level and advanced player certificate.
His involvement includes coaching the Humber Junior Academy, being a director of Humbersquash and also setting up the Woodland Squash Club to help junior development.
He said: "The increase of participation has really gone up with juniors visiting the leisure centre almost every day of the week sometimes."
Derek also visits local schools to teach pupils about mini squash, this has been organised through the School Sports Partnership.
