New karate club aims to keep the family together
A new karate club is being promoted as fun for the family.
Offering a sport which builds confidence and helps participants to learn respect and discipline while also keeping fit, Bubwith’s Red Tigers Club has the family at its heart, according to their website.
“Unlike sports such as football, rugby and tennis where the closest you come to participating with your child is to stand in the cold or coach his or her team, karate will allow you to stand side by side with your child as you train together.”
Meeting at the Bubwith Leisure Centre, the club teaches the Wado Ryu style of karate originating from Okinawa in Japan, which is much influenced by ju-jitsu (one of Japan’s oldest martial arts).
The club trains on Wednesdays from 6-7pm and Sundays from 6-8, but it actually finishes to suit the students as the instructors understand that children sometimes need to be home early on school nights.
But they do wish to correct some mistaken impressions about the sport – for example, that you can be too old and that it isn’t for girls.
A 73-year-old woman from the Castleford area gained her black belt in 2008, they say, and the flexibility of female hip physiology enables girls to achieve a higher and technically better standard of kicks than boys.
In addition, they stress that the club is not a boot camp. “You will probably become fitter and more flexible because of karate, but it’s all down to you as to how much effort you put in.”
As to confrontation and violence, they say: “Karate promotes a way of life in which violence is avoided unless all other outlets are exhausted but, if necessary, you will be able to defend you and yours.”
