New road race league launched

A brand new road race league is being introduced in Yorkshire to increase the number of competitions for top category cyclists.

And its co-ordinator is former Selby High School pupil Ashley Brown (pictured), part of the winning team in last year’s Race Across America and now heading up a fast-expanding business and social cycling club under the umbrella of Knottingley-based BBM Revolution.

Ashley, whose 2012 Sportscover-Altura team will be officially launched at a dinner on Saturday, said of the Yorkshire Road Race League: “Our aim is to increase the number of events of a decent standard to encourage more racing and improve the standard of the sport. We will be encouraging riders from around the UK to come to the races and make it a prestigious title for which to compete.”

The league kicks off in the spring and will comprise seven events all over the county including some closer to home – at York, Knottingley and Epworth.

A number of clubs have collaborated in the venture for which riders must compete in at least five races to qualify for the trophy.

The winner of each event will be awarded 60 points, dropping down to one point for 20th place.

With its notoriously tough terrain, Yorkshire is widely regarded as a breeding ground for talented cyclists and in this respect the Sportscover squad have already completed their first pre-season training mini-camp with a ride over the North York Moors to Whitby in sub-zero temperatures, designed to further build basic fitness. The outing included riders racing in cyclo-cross and track events, with Adam Duggleby winning three Manchester Track League events already this year.

Team member David Brown said: “It is important for the riders to get used to riding on the terrain used in the classic British events.”
