Horse riders looking for a long trek through the countryside largely unfettered by roads are welcome to join the next session for ‘endurance’ enthusiasts at Escrick Park on March 4.

With back-up on hand including vets, rides vary from 12 to 25 miles taking up to three-and-a-half hours, but the route is marked with maps given out to follow, and children accompanied by an adult are welcome.

A variety of horses take part. Regular participant Liz Worthy says: “My horse is a 19-year-old Shire cross who used to pull a carriage on Scarborough seafront and she does just fine. Others have anything from a gypsy pony or mountain and moorland type through to ex-racehorses and Arabs. And we all enjoy it.”

But the need for extensive training is not necessary, she adds, explaining that she rides about an hour a day over hilly terrain which keeps her horse fit enough.

“Last year we took part in many 25-mile rides with no problem to horse or rider,” said Liz.
