Plant pals to meet in final
DONCASTER Plant stablemates Jake Goodwin and Andrew Coltman are so determined to become Yorkshire Schoolboys champion that they will fight one another in the final!
The duo, both aged 14, were paired in the final of the Class 3 final at 54kg and have talked trainer Ken Blood into letting them both enter: “I had two lads drawn against one another about 20 years ago and I vowed then never to let it happen again,” said Blood.
“But the kids want to box and their parents want them to as well and they have promised to shake hands afterwards and share a lemonade so it should be fine.
“They’re good friends and know each other inside out from sparring in the gym.”
The meeting was unavoidable as both are comfortable at the weight and plans to enter one of the lads at a different weight failed to come off - so the friends will go toe-to-toe at Havercroft Leisure Centre on Sunday.
“It will be a very good bout. They’re both good boxers and I’d be surprised if it wasn’t the best bout of the day,” said Blood, who also has Cody Baxter in the 46kg final.
Arskey’s Coltman won his semi-final against Jubilee’s Liam Bell last week at Woodseats WMC whilst Hatfield’s Goodwin got a break after beating Harrogate’s Luke Maletesta in the preliminaries.
There’s another Doncaster derby on the day with Jordan Linstead (Oxers) facing Rory Hutton from Tom Hill.
