Play-off hopes are fading for Goole
HOPES are rapidly fading in Goole AFC's efforts on reaching the coveted play-off positions.
This is the stark reality after the Vikings crashed 2-0 at home to mid-table Leek Town at the weekend, the Staffordshire outfit taking a sixth minute lead and, ultimately, wrapping up three points with a goal just before half-time.
The result means manager Karl Rose has seen his side take just one point from the last available nine and they currently sit a lowly 15th in the Unibond League First Division South.
Indeed the statistics do not make for good reading for the Goole faithful as the Vikings are currently a massive 14 points off that elusive fifth place play-off berth.
The club has played more games than everyone else in the division - despite the five week enforced break because of the wintry weather - however they are a comfortable 16 points from being sucked into the drop zone.
But Rose dismisses any talk of there being nothing to play for in the remaining three months of the season.
He said: "The lads have to show professional pride and I won't allow standards to drop. We have a team who wants to go out there and win football matches. Saturday was just one of those days.
"We missed seven clear chances but we will work on the bad things and we need to be more ruthless - that's the overriding message.
"The side are playing for their contracts next season whether it's here or in a higher league. I tell them I used to play every game as if it was the last time I was going to kick a football. I can assure anyone when I send 11 players out there they give everything and I won't accept anything less."
Next up is Saturday's trip to promotion-chasing Witton Albion, 3pm kick off, and Rose is up for the challenge.
He said: "We go there full of confidence and are looking to turn the tide in our favour. There are three months left, 15 games to go, let's see how many games we can win until the end of the season. There's a lot to play for and they know what I want."
• The club is hosting a race night on Friday, February 19, which will be held in The Charter Club on Pasture Road, 7pm start.
Tickets cost 2.50, including buffet, and can be purchased on the night or from Carol or Eric on match days at the ground.
