Powerlifter Tony proves he is topswhen it comes to bench pressing
BRITAIN'S number one in the world of bench pressing is a West Cowick powerlifter.
Fifty-year-old Tony Stevenson of Lodge Lane beat off competition from 53 others to achieve his best title to date, after 30 years involved in the sport.
Tony, who is a volunteer worker at Snaith Hall, is now GBPF British Bench Press Champion after he took part in the event at Hamilton's Fitness Centre in Colchester on Saturday.
Competing in the First British Masters 2 (aged 50+) category, his first successful attempt weighed in at 150kg, he then raised it to 160kg which he achieved and just failed on a technicality at 170kg but beat Roy Cole into second place on body weight - Cole weighing in at 88.4kg and Stevenson at 86kg.
This achievement also helped him to come second overall in the 90kg class where he was up against Seniors, Masters 1 and Masters 2.
The competition was posted live on the internet and involved lifters from all across Britain.
Stevenson told the Courier: "The refereeing was very strict and there was some brilliant lifting on the day.
"I can't believe that I've done what I've done after 30 years of dedication to my sport.
"It's been a dream come true but I didn't achieve this on my own - my coach Dennis Worthington Senior has been behind me all the way.
"It's an achievement I will never forget, I can't believe it."
He next competes in Accrington in April when he will be taking part in three lift events - bench, deadlift and squat.
He added: "I hope to do very well there."
