Railwaymen keep on track in gale

With a man of the match performance from Matty Williams on his return from a lengthy injury lay-off, the Railwaymen kept their nerve after falling behind to pull off a convincing win over third-placed Bishops, writes David Whisker.

Playing into a gale which threatened to spoil the game after receiving new kit from sponsors J J Leisure, they immediately conceded a goal following a free-kick, but this seemed to galvanise them in action as they soon held the upper hand and constant pressure duly paid off as Parsonage’s free-kick found Friar who wrestled with the two centre-backs to scramble the ball in for the equaliser just before half-time. And as Brassa picked up their game with some great second-half football, skipper Teale put them in front with a penalty. With confidence oozing, they soon extended the lead when Parsonage found the net with another header from Coxon’s corner.

Aware of losing two-goal leads this season, they maintained their focus and killed off the game when Friar claimed his second – his tenth league goal from nine matches, evidence that he is one of Selby’s most prolific strikers. And the encounter finished with a flourish as C Howden made a spectacular save.

Manager Mathew Howden said: “When we play like we did today, no team can live with us. It’s just about keeping that consistency now.”

Selby RSSC Reserves......... 7

Jan Takacs and Ryan Willis bagged a brace apiece as the Reserves made up for the disappointment of losing a two-goal lead to Strensall in their last outing with a magnificent seven. And Graeme Rose capped his league debut by setting up the final goal.

Supplied by Willis, Takacs opened the scoring with a flicked header and then turned provider. Kyle Poole then unleashed a 25-yard rocket past the hapless keeper following a pass from man of the match Luke Lambert who subsequently set up Willis for his second.

Gary Howden left the keeper standing with a shot from the edge of the area and substitute Ricky Noble got the next before Takacs completed the rout with a flourish.
