Sherburn Bears..... 48

Wakefield City....... 20

After a first half epitomised by John ‘Boy’ Fenwick hitting the defensive line like a human cannonball, Bears kept their 100 per cent home record intact as they put their training into practice.

Few RL teams from a couple of divisions above them could have lived with them in the opening period as they tore their opponents apart in attack and gang-tackled them out of the game in defence, but they failed to keep up the momentum.

Big centre Bryn Watson opened their account with a couple of tries, with extras added by captain fantastic Martin Leahy who went on to collect 16 points by converting all eight scores.

The skipper then set up Fenwick with a lovely pass for the latter to burst through midfield before scorching past the full-back to touch down.

A brief altercation which saw an opponent sent off and Sam Booth sent to the sin-bin failed to stem the Sherburn tide and influential full-back Danny Wood scored an excellent try as he stepped past his hapless opposite number.

Steve Gudgeon then dived over following good work from winger Nick Crawshaw with Fenwick soon adding his second.

But Wakefield showed they were not top of the table by accident and came back with a series of consolations.

Kev Dalton crossed for a further Sherburn try, however, and Watson stole the ball from his opposite number before scoring under the sticks with an 80-metre dash to the line. Hard-tackling Joel Booth was named Willetts Kitchens man of the match.
